It is abhorrent that individuals and institutions would blindly deny other people respect because of skin color. Sadly, human history is full of personal and institutional examples of this repugnant behavior. Law enforcement has not been an exception. Solutions will involve people on all sides of the issue.
The WSU Police Department recently requested that the Compliance and Civil Rights (formerly the Office of Civil Rights Compliance and Investigation) conduct a study on our arrest statistics. The results were surprising and concerning. I’d like to thank CCR for their work conducting that study, but there is more work to do. Policing stands to change.
Using information such as the President’s recent Executive Order, President Obama’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing, Campaign Zero, and other recently published recommendations, we will partner with our WSU communities to examine local policy, procedure, and practice to identify and implement strategies to meet the highest standard of human care– love and respect for all people.
